A Estância Turística de Olímpia, Capital Nacional do Folclore, localizada no interior paulista, comemora 61 anos de um dos maiores eventos culturais do país, o Festival do Folclore de Olímpia (FEFOL). Marcado pelo encontro da cultura popular brasileira, o festival homenageia a cada ano um estado diferente para valorizar as manifestações tradicionais do Brasil e, em 2025, escolheu o Maranhão como centro da celebração.

Estado de muita tradição e resistência cultural, sua história é marcada pelo encontro de povos: indígenas originários, colonizadores europeus, principalmente portugueses e franceses, e populações africanas trazidas à força durante o período da escravidão. Dessa confluência nasceu uma identidade cultural singular e profundamente brasileira, transformando o estado da região Nordeste e banhado pelo Atlântico em um verdadeiro mosaico de influências culturais.

A capital, São Luís, é o coração pulsante dessa riqueza. Conhecida como “Ilha do Amor”, por suas paisagens; “Atenas Brasileira”, por sua arquitetura colonial histórica; e “Jamaica Brasileira”, por ser o local que o reggae mais faz sucesso fora do território jamaicano; a cidade é Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade graças ao seu centro histórico com mais de 3.500 casarões coloniais cobertos de azulejos portugueses.

Com diversidade de expressões populares, o Maranhão é uma das terras mais fecundas do Bumba Meu Boi, manifestação cultural cujo espetáculo gira em torno da morte e ressurreição de um boi. Mistura teatro, música, dança e religiosidade popular, com suas diversas formas de apresentação, chamadas de “sotaques” – como matraca, orquestra, zabumba, pindaré e costa de mão. Os grupos celebram essa tradição principalmente durante o mês de junho, com apogeu no São João. O Bumba Meu Boi é Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade pela Unesco.

Outra manifestação essencial é o Tambor de Crioula, reconhecido como Patrimônio Cultural do Brasil. Praticado em homenagem a São Benedito, o tambor reúne homens percussionistas e mulheres dançantes chamadas “coreiras”, que giram em saias amplas e coloridas ao som dos tambores rufados com as mãos. A dança é espontânea, corporal, circular — uma expressão de alegria, fé e ancestralidade negra.

A gastronomia maranhense é outro capítulo de sua cultura viva. Rica, variada e marcada por ingredientes típicos do litoral, da floresta e dos campos, a culinária reflete os traços da mistura cultural. O arroz de cuxá é o prato mais emblemático — feito com arroz, vinagreira (erva de sabor azedo), camarão seco, carne de sol e temperos.

A peculiaridade do Maranhão se dá pela música, colonização, vegetação e cultura, que perfazem uma história única no país. O estado chegou a ganhar uma canção própria, “Maranhão, meu tesouro, meu torrão’, composta por Humberto Barbosa Mendes, conhecido como Humberto de Maracanã (1939-2015), cantor e compositor referência no Bumba-meu-boi de São Luís, e regravada pela renomada cantora maranhense Alcione. Tamanha é a importância da canção que, em outubro de 2021, o Governo do Maranhão sancionou a Lei nº?11.562/2021, declarando a toada como patrimônio cultural imaterial do Estado.

A homenagem

E, assim, rico em sua essência o estado foi escolhido como homenageado do 61º FEFOL, pela primeira vez. Ao longo da história do festival, grupos do Maranhão já foram homenageados, mas o estado em si estreará como estrela nesta edição. Uma maneira de enaltecer ainda mais os laços culturais, criando a oportunidade de imersão na cultura do estado homenageado para a preparação da edição e um verdadeiro intercâmbio cultural.

O estado está presente na identidade visual da festa, no enredo do espetáculo de abertura, no estudo nas salas de aula da rede municipal de educação, na decoração do Recinto do Folclore e em todos os cantos por onde pulsará a cultura do Brasil, durante os nove dias de festa, que contará com três representantes do Maranhão.

Marcam presença no FEFOL representando o estado e seus folguedos: o Bumba Boi de Matraca do Maiobão, de Paço do Lumiar, que faz sua estreia no festival; o Boi de Nina Rodrigues; e o Boi de Morros.

Ao valorizar o Maranhão nesta edição do Festival do Folclore, celebra-se a resistência, a criatividade e a beleza de um povo que transforma a vida em arte. Um povo que dança para contar suas histórias, que canta suas dores e amores, que alimenta a alma com fé, ritmo e sabor.

Sobre o Festival do Folclore de Olímpia (FEFOL)

O Festival do Folclore de Olímpia (FEFOL) é o maior festival de folclore do Brasil, consolidando a cidade como Capital Nacional do Folclore desde 2017. Criado na década de 1960 pelo professor José Sant’anna, o evento preserva e valoriza as tradições populares brasileiras há mais de 60 anos, reunindo manifestações autênticas de todas as regiões do país.

A 61ª edição é histórica, com a participação de mais de 60 grupos representando 21 estados brasileiros, de todas as regiões, incluindo, este ano, as presenças inéditas de Roraima e Acre. A programação reúne mais de 120 apresentações no palco principal, desfiles pelas ruas centrais, oficinas de dança, Pavilhão de Artesanato e atividades no Museu do Folclore, com destaque para o estado do Maranhão, homenageado da edição. A expectativa é de mais de 180 mil visitantes durante os nove dias de festival.

O Festival do Folclore de Olímpia é uma realização da Prefeitura, por meio da Secretaria de Cultura e Defesa do Folclore, com apoio de projetos de incentivo cultural e parceiros. Com entrada gratuita, a 61ª edição será realizada de 02 a 10 de agosto de 2025, no Recinto do Folclore.
